New Year's Resolutions - Live Green!

Happy New 2010 Friends,

New Year's Day is fast approaching, and along with it, all those resolutions. This year why not resolve to make a few simple lifestyle changes that could have a huge impact on the earth? To help you get started, here are 10 easy "green" New Year's resolutions:

1. Ditch the plastic. Carry a reusable bag with you for groceries, shopping and take-out food.

2. Tuck in your computer at night. Turn off your screen saver and cut even more energy that your computer uses by putting it in sleep mode when it isn't in use.

3. Clean with green. Clean your home with non-toxic and natural cleaning products. Just about anything can be cleaned with white vinegar, baking soda and a few drops of lemon.

4. Be good to your vehicle, and it will be good to you. Inflate your tires once a month or as necessary. Replace the air filter and tune up your engine regularly. A new air filter can get you 10 percent more miles per gallon, and a tune-up can boost miles per gallon from 4 percent to 40 percent.

5. Think globally, buy locally. Buy locally grown food that's in season. Food that hasn't traveled thousands of miles to your plate is fresher and tastier, and buying local food drastically cuts down on global-warming pollution.

6. Coffee — it's not just for drinking anymore. The next time you brew a cup of fresh coffee at home, don't toss the used coffee grounds into the trash. First, spoon some warm grounds into your hands and mix it with your favorite hand soap, then scrub away. The grounds will exfoliate dead skin and the soap will render your hands squeaky clean. Scatter remaining grounds around your evergreen shrubs and trees — it's an energizing fertilizer for them.

7. Start composting today. A compost pile or composter turns your food and lawn wastes into rich mulch. It's a great way to reduce your trash production, and if you start today, you'll have rich compost in time for spring planting.

8. Don't be a drip. Fix leaky faucets. A faucet that drips once each second can waste over 8 gallons of water per day and more than 3,000 gallons per year.

9. Turn dollars into sense. Save on energy consumption and your electric bill by turning down your thermometer and throwing on your favorite fuzzy pajamas.

10. Ease up on the pedal. Slowing down from 75 to 65 miles per hour will drop your highway gas consumption by about 15 percent.

The 25 Days of Christmas Day 25: Alternative to Baskets Complimented by The Lady’s Cheesy Mac Recipe

Merry Christmas Friends,

When giving homemade treats as a gift, think outside the basket. A colorful bowl, platter or tray does the trick and is more likely to be reused by the recipient. Shop estate sales, flea markets and antique markets to find vintage transferware, hand-painted porcelain and cut crystal. For no-cost options, check your cupboards for those bowls, platters or trays that you picked up because they caught your eye but rarely use for whatever reason. Recycle is the new trend.

Enjoy and share this The Lady’s Cheesy Mac recipe courtesy of Paula Deen.

Ingredients:
4 tablespoons butter, cut into pieces
1/2 cup sour cream
2 cups grated cheddar cheese
3 eggs, beaten
4 cups cooked elbow macaroni, drained
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup milk

Directions;
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Once you have the macaroni cooked and drained, place in a large bowl and while still hot and add the cheddar. In a separate bowl, combine the remaining ingredients and add to the macaroni mixture. Pour macaroni mixture into a casserole dish and bake for 30 to 45 minutes. Top with additional cheese if desired.

Servings: 6 to 8 servings
Prep Time: 20 min

The 25 Days of Christmas Day 23: Keep It Simple Complimented by Collard Greens Recipe

Merry Christmas Friends,

It's our pleasure to continue the 25 Days of Christmas feature for you, our good friends. December 1st through December 25th you can visit our blog for helpful, money-saving ideas to decorate your space for the holidays. It's just a little something to show our appreciation for your continued support of Interior Design eBlog.

Keep it simple, limit your gift wrap to four or five paper choices. Create a theme with your papers and ribbons that accentuates the tree and becomes part of the tree-scape. Truly a lesson in simplicity and money-saver.

Enjoy and share this Collard Greens recipe courtesy of Paula Deen.

Ingredients:
1 large bunch collard greens
1 tablespoon Paula Deen’s Seasoned Salt
1 tablespoon Paula Deen’s Hot Sauce
1/2 lb smoked meat (ham hocks, smoked turkey wings, or smoked neck bones)
1 tablespoon butter

Directions:
In a large pot, bring 3 quarts of water to a boil and add smoked meat, house seasoning, seasoned salt and hot sauce. Reduce heat to medium and cook for 1 hour.

Wash the collard greens thoroughly. Remove the stems that run down the center by holding the leaf in your left hand and stripping the leaf down with your right hand. The tender young leaves in the heart of the collards don’t need to be stripped. Stack 6 to 8 leaves on top of one another, roll up, and slice into 1/2 to 1-ince thick slices. Place greens in pot with meat and add butter. Cook for 45 to 60 minutes, stirring occasionally. When done taste and adjust seasoning.

Serve with favorite dish as a side.

Servings: 4 to 6 servings
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time: 2 hours
Difficulty: Easy

The 25 Days of Christmas Day 21: Toy Boxes to Seats Complimented by Rene’s Coleslaw Recipe

Created these toy boxes to store the toys for triplets or just your three little ones. The clearly labeled boxes make it easy to keep the kids' toys separate and can also function as benches. An ideal project for Dad to build and Mom to decorate. Extra storage space is always a gift. These attractive mobile toy boxes can be made with decorative fabric or paint and personalize to style.

Materials and Tools:
birch plywood (see dimensions below)
3/8-inch pieces of birch
wood glue
1-1/4 inch framing nails
four caster wheels
cushion insert (19-inch square)
fabric in desired color/pattern
staples
paint
table saw
miter saw
framing nailer
staple gun
paintbrush
scissors

Steps:

1. Cut the birch plywood down to the following dimensions for the cubes:
four pieces at 16-1/4 by 15-1/4 inches for the sides
one piece at 17-inches square for the bottom
one piece at 19-inches square for the top
one piece at 15-1/4 inches square for the top inset

2. Cut the 3/8-inch birch down to the following dimensions for the trim:
eight strips at 2 by 13-inches
four strips at 2 by 16-inches
four strips at 2-3/8 by 16-inches

3. Glue and nail the side pieces together to create a box, with a consistent wood grain on each side. Each long edge will continually overlap the edge of the adjacent piece to form a crisscross pattern, making the total width 17 inches all the way around.

4. Nail the bottom into place, making sure everything is nice and flush.

5. Glue and nail trim onto each side, with the rails (horizontal pieces) secured inside the stiles (vertical pieces). The 2 by 13-inch strips will serve as the rails, the 2 by 16-inch pieces will serve as the left-hand stiles, and the 2-3/8 by 16-inch strips will serve as the right-hand stiles. The right side trim is wider (the same thickness as the trim piece itself) in order to cover the edge of the left-hand stile on the adjacent side. Overlap the stiles in the same manner the cube sides were attached.

6. Once the cube is assembled, paint it the color of your choice.

7. Assemble the top by centering the inset piece on the bottom of the cube top and securing it with nails.

8. Place a cushion insert squarely on top of the cube top. Wrap fabric around the cushion and fold it under the top. Secure the fabric on the underside with staples and trim away excess material or just paint to your desired color.

9. Attach four casters onto the bottom corners of the cube to add mobility to the piece.

10. Place the top onto the cube. The inset should fit snugly inside the cube for seating.

Enjoy and share Rene’s Coleslaw recipe courtesy of Paula Deen.

Ingredients:
1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper
1/2 cup diced celery
1/4 cup chopped green onions, white and green parts
1/2 cup almonds, toasted
1 1/2 cup dried cranberries
5 cup shredded cabbage (can buy shredded from store but not angel hair shredded cabbag

Dressing:
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1 tbsp sweet pickle relish
1 tbsp honey mustard
1 tbsp honey
Salt and Pepper

Directions:
Combine cabbage, almonds, cranberries, celery, green onions, and green pepper in a large plastic bowl with a snap-on lid. Combine all dressing ingredients, adding salt and pepper to taste, and refrigerate until ready to serve. Pour dressing over slaw just before serving. Stir well.

Servings: 10 - 12 servings

The 25 Days of Christmas Day 20: Creative Christmas Gifts Complimented by Raspberry Fig Preserves Recipe

Jars of homemade jam make a memorable gift when embellished with fabric, ribbon and glittering faux flowers, leaves and fruit. No time to make jam, use candy, cookie balls or the favorite treat that would make it the perfect gift for your employees or co-workers. Recycle unused decorations from years past for a personal gift at an incredibly inexpensive price. Happy jamming!

Enjoy and share this Raspberry Fig Preserves recipe courtesy of Paula Deen.

Ingredients:
3 cup ripe figs, mashed
3 cup sugar
2 (3-ounce) packages raspberry gelatin
Directions

Mix all ingredients together in saucepan and cook 4 minutes at rolling boil. Stir frequently. Skim with a strainer. Pour into sterilized jars; seal.

Tips on Sterilizing Jars:
Properly-handled sterilized equipment will keep canned foods in good condition for years. Sterilizing jars is the first step of preserving foods.

Sterilizing Tips:
Jars should be made from glass and free of any chips or cracks. Preserving or canning jars are topped with a glass, plastic, or metal lid, which has a rubber seal. Two piece lids are best for canning, as they vacuum seal when processed.

To sterilize jars, before filling with jams, pickles, or preserves, wash jars and lids with hot, soapy water. Rinse well and arrange jars and lids open sides up, without touching, on a tray. Leave in a preheated 175 degree F oven for 25 minutes. Or, boil the jars and lids in a large saucepan, covered with water, for 15 minutes.

Use tongs when handling the hot sterilized jars, to move them from either boiling water or the oven. Be sure the tongs are sterilized too, by dipping the ends in boiling water for a few minutes.

As a rule, hot preserves go into hot jars and cold preserves go into cold jars. All items used in the process of making jams, jellies, and preserves must be clean. This includes any towels used, and especially your hands.

After the jars are sterilized, you can preserve the food. It is important to follow any canning and processing instructions included in the recipe and refer to USDA guidelines about the sterilization of canned products.

Servings: 8 (1/2 pint) jars
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 25 min
Difficulty: Easy

The 25 Days of Christmas Day 19: Deck the Halls and the Tree Complimented by Deep-Fried Turkey Recipe

Tis the season to decorate. Snow is the theme of this Christmas tree with large snowmen ornaments and flocked branches bring the winter outdoors in. If you're dreaming of a White Christmas you will enjoy the echo of white inside and out. Invite friends and family to gather in your winter wonderland.

Enjoy and share this Deep-Fried Turkey recipe courtesy of Paula Deen.

Ingredients:
2 tablespoon of your favorite dry rub
2 tablespoon Paula Deen’s House Seasoning
1 10-pound Turkey
3-5 gallons peanut oil

Directions:
Cooks Note: To measure the amount of oil needed to fry the turkey, place turkey in fryer, add water to top of turkey, remove the turkey and the water line will indicate how much oil will be needed to fry your turkey. Having too much oil can cause a fire. The pot should not be more than 3/4 full or the oil could overflow when the turkey is added.

Wash bird inside and out, and allow to drain. Rub turkey all over with House Seasoning. Coat turkey with dry rub. Allow the bird to sit until it reaches room temperature.

Heat peanut oil in a turkey fryer or a very, very large stockpot to 350 degrees F. Lower turkey into hot oil, very carefully, making sure it is fully submerged. Fry turkey for 3 minutes per pound plus 5 minutes per bird. Remove turkey from oil and drain on paper towels.

Safety tips:
The turkey fryer needs to be outside on a flat surface. Do not deep fry a turkey in a garage or a covered carport.

Always keep a fire extinguisher (rated for grease fires) nearby.

Large oven mitts or fireplace gloves must be worn.

Always wear eye protection and full face protection would be even better.

When lowering the turkey into the oil, turn off the flame.

And do not allow those guests, especially children and pets near the turkey cooker.

Follow these safety tips and use common sense and your turkey frying experience will be safe and successful.

Yield: 6 to 8 people
Preparation time: 30 minutes
Cooking time: 35 minutes
Ease of preparation: easy

The 25 Days of Christmas Day 17: Simple Sophistication Complimented by Delicious Pumpkin Pie Recipe

Set the stage for an unforgettable Christmas feast with a centerpiece that exemplifies bounty. A ghost-white pumpkin, chunky pillar candles and metallic-painted gourds add sparkle. Not your traditional red and green but definitely a setting that transitions beyond the Christmas dinner. Incorporating natural elements with the gleam of copper, gold and silver is also eco-friendly. Transform your holiday centerpiece into a pumpkin pie for Sunday dessert. Enjoy this delicious recipe from Paula Deen's collection.

Ingredients:
1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened
2 cups canned pumpkin, mashed
1 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 egg plus 2 egg yolks, slightly beaten
1 cup half-and-half
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) melted butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger, optional
1 piece pre-made pie dough
Whipped cream, for topping

Directions:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Place 1 piece of pre-made pie dough down into a (9-inch) pie pan and press down along the bottom and all sides. Pinch and crimp the edges together to make a pretty pattern. Put the pie shell back into the freezer for 1 hour to firm up. Fit a piece of aluminum foil to cover the inside of the shell completely. Fill the shell up to the edges with pie weights or dried beans (about 2 pounds) and place it in the oven. Bake for 10 minutes, remove the foil and pie weights and bake for another 10 minutes or until the crust is dried out and beginning to color.

For the filling, in a large mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese with a hand mixer. Add the pumpkin and beat until combined. Add the sugar and salt, and beat until combined. Add the eggs mixed with the yolks, half-and-half, and melted butter, and beat until combined. Finally, add the vanilla, cinnamon, and ginger, if using, and beat until incorporated.

Pour the filling into the warm prepared pie crust and bake for 50 minutes, or until the center is set. Place the pie on a wire rack and cool to room temperature. Cut into slices and top each piece with a generous amount of whipped cream.

Servings: 6 to 8 servings
Cook Time: 50 min

Check back for more holiday ideas and enjoy the pumpkin pie with family and friends.

The 25 Days of Christmas Day 12: Use Traditional Colors Dramatically Complimented by ‘Ol No. 7 Yams Recipe

Photo courtesy of Roberta Martin Interiors
Designed by Concepts by Nancy and Leonard

Merry Christmas Friends,

It's our pleasure to continue the 25 Days of Christmas feature for you, our good friends. December 1st through December 25th you can visit our blog for helpful, money-saving ideas to decorate your space for the holidays. It's just a little something to show our appreciation for your continued support of Interior Design eBlog.

For many, the winter holidays are an invitation to decorate with abandon — even if all other elements (party planning, seasonal events, the family meal) are kept simple. Here, a tree, mantel and cocktail table display seasonal finery: rich red amaryllis accompanied by elegant golds and greens. Keep meals and traditions simple but decorate dramatically.

Enjoy and share this ‘Ol No. 7 Yams recipe courtesy of Paula Deen.

Ingredients:
1 long strip orange peel
1/3 cup No 7 Jack Daniels Bourbon
1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
1 3 to 4 inch cinnamon stick
4 tablespoons butter
1 cup brown sugar
3 cups water
4 large sweet potatoes

Directions:
Wash and dry sweet potatoes and bake at 400 degrees for one hour, until potatoes are soft to the touch. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly then remove skin from potatoes. Reduce oven temperature to 350 degrees. While the potatoes are baking, combine remaining ingredients in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 30 to 45 minutes until sauce is slightly thickened. Slice the potatoes 1/2-inch thick into a medium casserole dish. Pour syrup over them and return to the oven and bake for approximately 30 minutes.

Tip: To make this dish faster, bake potatoes the night before, leave skin on and throw in the refrigerator until ready to use.

Servings: 4 servings
Prep Time: 10 min
Cook Time: 1 hour 45 min
Difficulty: Easy

Check back for more holiday ideas and enjoy dramatic decorating with family and friends.

Serve in a side bowl with turkey or any preferred holiday dish.

The 25 Days of Christmas Day 5: Christmas in Green and Gold Complimented by Peach Cobbler Recipe

Step away from the traditional green-and-red color theme and try a green-and-gold color scheme for the Christmas tree by adding stems of glittering faux greenery to the tree. A good rule of thumb is to add the largest ornaments to the tree closest to the trunk and decrease the size of the ornaments as you work your way out to the branch ends.

Traditional holiday decorating is a way of life for some but it's becoming more common-place to implement a touch of the modern-day holiday. A combination of the old and new is an excellent idea and you may be surprised with the results.

Enjoy and share this Peach Cobbler recipe courtesy of Paula Deen.

Ingredients:
1 1/2 cup self-rising flour
8 tablespoon (1 stick) butter
1/2 cup water
2 cup sugar, divided
4 cup peeled, sliced peaches
1 1/2 cup milk
ground cinnamon, optional

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Combine the peaches, 1 cup sugar, and water in a saucepan and mix well. Bring to a boil and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from the heat.

Put the butter in a 3-quart baking dish and place in oven to melt. Mix remaining 1 cup sugar, flour, and milk slowly to prevent clumping. Pour mixture over melted butter. Do not stir. Spoon fruit on top, gently pouring in syrup. Sprinkle top with ground cinnamon, if using. Batter will rise to top during baking. Bake for 30 to 45 minutes. To serve, scoop onto a plate and serve with your choice of whipped cream or vanilla ice cream. Recipe courtesy Paula Deen

The 25 Days of Christmas Day 4: Old-Fashioned Christmas Complimented by Deep-Fried Ham Recipe

There is truly nothing like an old-fashioned Christmas with family and friends. Incorporate your existing holiday decorations with new pieces. Muted colors bring in the Americana look. A subdued yellow wall color is a great backdrop for the gold and red fabric and decorations throughout the room; it's also a great color for year-round.

Exchange the sectional couches with a pair of deep burgundy couches and some chairs from another room in the house, Bring in the rich textures associated with the Victorian style. People get stuck on thinking that their furniture is meant for only one room in the house; switching furniture is an easy way to get a whole new look for the holidays. Also simplify the tree and the ornaments for a clean, classic presentation.

Enjoy and share this Deep-Fried Ham recipe courtesy of Paula Deen.

Ingredients:

Brine:
1 gallon water
1 gallon apple cider
1 cup dark brown sugar
1 cup kosher salt
2 cinnamon sticks
4 cloves
10 pound uncooked ham
Peanut oil, for frying, about 5 gallons

Glaze:
3 cups pineapple juice
1 (8-ounce) can crushed pineapple with juice
1/2 cup Dijon mustard
1 cup dark brown sugar
1/2 cup honey

Directions
In a large plastic tub, place all of the brine ingredients and stir until dissolved. Place the ham in the brine and refrigerate overnight. The following day, take the ham out of the brine and dry well.

Fill your turkey fryer with the peanut oil. Heat the oil to 375 degrees F. *Cook’s Note: For a larger ham, use less oil as the larger the ham, the more liquid displacement there will be.

Place the ham carefully inside the fryer. There is a lot of moisture in the ham, the oil will bubble up intensely, so be careful and lower it very slowly. Cook for 7 1/2 minutes per pound. The ham will be cooked when it is 160 degrees F. inside. Check it with an instant-read thermometer to make sure it is cooked.

Remove the ham carefully letting it cool off and drain of excess oil for about 10 to 15 minutes.

Glaze:
Combine all the ingredients in a medium saucepan on low heat and let reduce until a syrupy consistency.

Let the glaze cool slightly and then pour it over the deep fried ham. Serve any extra glaze on the side at the table.

Servings: 8 to 10 servings
Cook Time: 1 hr 25 min
Difficulty: Moderate

The 25 Days of Christmas Day 3: 12 Tips for Holiday Entertaining Success Complimented by Southern Cornbread Stuffing Recipe

The holiday season is the perfect time to spend with family and friends. Tradition is the definition of holiday but sometimes it's a good idea to step outside the box. You will be surprised with the outcome.

1. Forgo a traditional floral centerpiece on the dining table and instead create a charming holiday scene featuring gingerbread houses or ceramic Christmas village miniatures. First sprinkle faux snow along the center of the table, then place homes, stores, trees and people to create a focal point that will delight guests of all ages.

2. Rather than rushing out to buy expensive new china, glasses and silverware for a holiday get-together, consider renting it. No matter where you live, chances are there's a party rental store near you. The prices are reasonable and by renting rather than buying you also avoid having to store the items year after year.

3. A simple way to give your holiday decorations a professionally decorated look is to stick to just two or three colors. Deciding on a palette before you shop makes the selection process quick and easy. Flameless candles are a great holiday decorating solution when you want the flame without the fuss.

4. Flickering candlelight is beautiful, but if small children or pets will be part of the celebration substitute battery-powered votive and pillar candles for a warm glow without the worries.

5. For a custom look that's easy to achieve, add ornaments, wrapped candies, children's toys or glittered greenery to a plain wreath. The decorating options are nearly endless and embellishing a wreath is a fun project to do with the kids.
Homemade gingerbread men add a sweet touch to Christmas decorations.

6. Adding a vintage element, such as homemade gingerbread men, hand-strung popcorn or a cranberry garland to your holiday decorations lends a sentimental, old-fashioned feel.

7. Always test Christmas lights before adding them to the tree. Nothing is more disappointing (and frustrating) than spending an afternoon carefully wrapping the tree with lights only to plug them in and discover that they don't work.
A humdrum chandelier is given a holiday update with an evergreen garland and paper shades embellished with ribbon.

8. Give your chandelier a simple holiday update by draping the arms with an evergreen garland and embellishing plain paper shades with an assortment of ribbon attached with hot glue.

9. To cover an unusually shaped or extra-long table, simply drape it with fabric from the bolt. Measure the length of the table keeping in mind that 36 inches is equivalent to one yard. Add a few inches to each side to allow the fabric to puddle on the ground — no sewing required. Fresh roses add a colorful and fragrant pop to holiday decorations.

10. Add fragrance and an unexpected touch to evergreen garlands and the Christmas tree by placing fresh flowers among the greenery. To keep flowers fresh for days, first clip the ends then insert into water-filled bubble tubes which are available at florist-supply stores.

11. A lit fireplace is beautiful but can quickly heat up a room filled with guests. To get the look without the warmth, instead fill the hearth with lit pillar candles.

12. Make your decorations shine by working strands of twinkling mini lights into garlands, topiaries and tablescapes. If you plan on using lights outdoors, check the packaging to make sure that both lights and any needed drop cords are rated safe for outdoor use.

Hosting a holiday party can feel like an overwhelming balancing act. But if you plan ahead and defuse the stress, you can host and enjoy.
