15 Spots You Have to Clean Before Guests Arrive...

Courtesy of Leanne Potts

Hi Friends,

Company is coming in an hour, and your house is a mess. Don’t panic! You can get ready for guests, fast, even when you don’t have a ton of time. The trick is to clean only the most visible areas. Here’s how.

Sweep Outside
Photography by Todd Douglas/Getty Images

The front porch and steps are the first things guests will see, so grab a broom and clear them of debris and cobwebs. Knock cobwebs off the door jamb and the light fixtures. If you have a doormat, shake it out and use the garden hose to rinse it off.

Mix a solution of hot water and a few drops of dish soap, dampen a washcloth, and wipe the back and front of the door. Give extra scrubs to the area around the handles where it’s extra dirty from hands touching it all the time. If there’s glass in the door, use a mixture of vinegar and water to get off the smudges from dog noses and kids’ hands.

Pick up the backpacks and put away the shoes that get pulled off and dropped just inside the door when your family comes home. If you’re in a red-hot hurry, throw that stuff in your bedroom and close the door. You can put it where it belongs later when company is gone. Damp mop or vacuum the floor, and clean and dust any mirrors or foyer tables.

Grab a laundry basket and gather up all the shoes, toys, and stacks of junk mail from rooms where your guests will be. You don’t have to put them where they belong, just stash the basketful of stuff in the laundry room or closet. Marie Kondo would not approve, but with just an hour to clean, tidy can stand in for organized.

Run a Damp Mop Over the Kitchen Floor
Photography by Andy Vinson

Those floors get really messy, really fast, with all the food spills and foot traffic. Run a damp mop moistened with a water-based cleaner on the high-traffic areas and any other surfaces guests can see. Damp mopping is faster than a full-on mop job with a sudsy bucket of water. The floor dries faster, too.

De-Stink Your Kitchen
From: Vanessa DeLeon

Get rid of the lingering smell of yesterday’s fish dinner and the last night’s microwave popcorn. Grab a saucepan, combine three tablespoons of vinegar with a cup of water in it and bring it to a boil for several minutes on the stove. The vinegar will kill airborne odors. When you’re done, pour the hot water and vinegar down the garbage disposal to get the smell out there, too.

Vacuum Furniture
From: Emily Fazio

Your sofa and chairs probably have dirt, crumbs, and pet hair on them. Use a vacuum with an attachment, or a lint roller, to clean the back and fronts of the cushions. Vacuum or lint roll the throw pillows, too.

Clean the Guest Bathroom
From: Brian Patrick Flynn

This is the most visited room in the house, so be sure it’s ready for its close up. Clean the toilet and wipe its sides with a microfiber cloth to remove the germs. Wipe out the sink, and use a vinegar and water solution to get smudges off the mirror. Take any personal items off the counter and stash them, and wipe the counter.

Focus on Faucets

Be sure to clean the smudges and water spots off the faucet and spigots in the kitchen and guest bath. When they’re shiny, they give the impression the whole room’s been scrubbed to Instagram perfection.

Zap Dust
From: Camille Styles
Photography by Molly Winters

Grab a microfiber duster and do a fast lap around the rooms you’ll be socializing in. Run the duster over tabletops, shelves, and lamp shades. Want to go even faster? Skip the duster and use one of the dirty socks you picked up off the floor as a dust rag.

Clean the Soap Dish or Soap Dispenser
Photography by Martin Klimek/Getty Images

Because caked-on soap scum is just gross. Use a lemon-based cleaner, or a solution of vinegar and hot water, to rinse off the goo at the sinks in the kitchen and guest bath.

Get the Reek Out of Your Rug
Photography by Loch and Key

Carpets and rugs hold odors from pets, smoking, and cooking. To freshen them fast, sprinkle on baking soda, a natural destroyer of odors, wait 15 minutes and then vacuum the soda and the stink away.

Wipe Down Kitchen Appliances and Counters
Photography by Loch and Key

The kitchen is for socializing as much as cooking, (hello, open floor plans) so wipe the spills and crumbs off the counters, and the smudges off the exterior of the microwave, dishwasher, stovetop, and fridge. Clean any surfaces your guests can see. And of course, put any dirty dishes in the dishwasher.

Empty Trash Cans
Take out the trash in the kitchen and guest bath so your indoor air won’t smell like yesterday’s garbage. Wipe fingerprints and spills off the top and exterior of the can, and put in a new, clean trash bag.

Clear Cobwebs from Ceiling Corners

Grab a duster with an extendable handle or a vacuum attachment and clean the corners of ceilings in rooms your guest will go into. Because nothing says "I’m a sloppy housekeeper" like a cobweb collection overhead.

How to Host Guests Without a Guest Bedroom...

Courtesy of Allie Holcomb King

Hi Friends,

Don't let your studio apartment scare guests away.

If you live somewhere without a designated guest bedroom, you might’ve decided overnight guests are not an option for you. Well, I’m here to change your mind. With a little planning and preparation, you can ensure you and your guests feel comfortable, no matter your square footage. Keep reading to see exactly how to pull it off.

Add Privacy With a Room Divider
In My Own Style

A temporary room divider is a great option if you live in a studio or one-bedroom apartment. The wall will provide nighttime privacy for a better night’s sleep — something you and your guest will both appreciate. Don’t have a room divider? Get crafty, and make one.

Or a Tension Rod & Curtains
RoomDividersNow

Another way to create privacy is by hanging curtains with a tension rod. Depending on your space, this option may work better than a classic room divider.

Invest in a Daybed or Sleeper Sofa

If you don’t have a spare bed and aren’t moving anytime soon, consider investing in a nice daybed or sleeper sofa. If that’s out of your price range, shop for a quality air mattress. Need an immediate solution? Hello, sofa.

Always Provide Sheets
John Woodcock Photography

Even if a sofa is all you have to offer, dress it as if it were a bed. Locate a set of your best sheets, and wrap the fitted sheet around the seat cushions. Complete the makeshift bed with a top sheet, comforter and quality pillow.

Convert an End Table Into a Nightstand

Though your guest may be staying in your living room, you want it to feel bedroom-like. One way to achieve this is to convert an end table into a nightstand. Remove your table’s accessories, and fill it with nighttime essentials, instead. For starters, make sure your guests have some source of bedtime light, whether it’s a basic lamp or a small reading light. Top the table with other thoughtful extras, like a candle, ear plugs, an eye mask, a magazine and tissues.

Make a Welcome Basket
Maddie Butterfield

Beside your makeshift nightstand, leave a welcome basket filled with things like mini toiletries, bottled water and snacks. Also include a slip of paper with your Wi-Fi password.

Offer Neatly Folded Towels

If your welcome basket is large enough, you can include carefully rolled towels in it. If not, stack folded towels beside the basket. The key is providing fresh, quality towels and displaying them neatly. This creates a hotel-esque vibe that will make your guests feel relaxed.

Provide Extra Blankets & A Fan
Regan Baker Design Inc.

If guests won’t have control of the thermostat, it’s nice to offer other climate control options. Fill a basket with extra blankets, and leave it beside the sofa, daybed or air mattress. If you have a portable fan, leave that, too. Not only does a fan provide comfort for those who like cooler sleeping temps, but it can also provide white noise to drown out unwanted sounds.

Set Them Up Near a Bathroom

If at all possible, set your guests up near a bathroom. This will provide an added level of comfort, especially for guests who are unfamiliar with your home.

Happy President’s Day!

Hi Friends,

We wanted to share this poem about our leaders who put pride in Red, White & Blue.

Our Presidents

by Winifred Sackville Stoner, Jr.

George Washington, Adams and Jefferson three
First rulers of Uncle Sam’s land of the free:
Then Madison, Monroe and Adams again
All clever and upright and good honest men;
The Jackson, Van Buren and Harrison first,
Tyler and Polk whose terms were so curst
By war with the Mexicans who lost in the fray -
Then Taylor and Fillmore and Pierce held their sway.
Buchanan and Lincoln, Johnson and Grant,
Then Hayes, martyred Garfield, despiser of cant,
Arthur and Cleveland, Harrison (Ben)
McKinley the martyr, beloved by all men;
Then most energetic and strenuous Teddy
And plump William Taft for a second term ready
When Wilson was placed in this nation’s great chair
And promised to always rule wisely and fair.

Hi Friends,

Basically everything from the (RED) online shop is perfect for Valentine’s Day. It’s all red, people. But if you haven’t made a (RED) purchase in a while, consider it. This organization is still fighting such an important fight: to deliver the first AIDS-free generation. Check out their ALEX AND ANI partner bracelets or their partnership with Fresh! Yes, there’s now a SUGA(RED) lip treatment. See what they did there? Both of these purchases provide more than two weeks of live-saving pills.
