Rice Cereal Monsters

Compliments of Sam Henderson

Hi Friends,

These treats definitely won't suck the fun out of your Halloween soiree. With vampire teeth they can keep, your guests will fall in love with these tasty nibbles at first bite.

Download Beware of Monsters Sign HERE

Get the Rice Cereal Monsters Recipe below:

Ingredients
8 tablespoons unsalted butter
12 cups mini marshmallows (2 bags)
1/2 teaspoon salt
12 cups rice cereal
1 teaspoon vanilla
32 chocolate or peanut butter candy pieces
16 plastic vampire teeth
printable "Beware of Monsters" sign
Yield: 16 monsters

Instructions
1. Melt the butter and marshmallows in a large pot over medium low heat until all marshmallows are melted (Image 1).

2. Remove from heat and stir in salt, vanilla and cereal until fully coated with marshmallow mixture (Image 2).

3. Pour mixture into a large greased bowl or baking sheet (Image 3).

4. Use a little butter to grease hands and form balls (about 65 grams each) by pressing firmly and rolling between palms (Image 1).

5. Place tightly pressed balls on a baking sheet and refrigerate for at least 1 hour before proceeding (Image 2).

6. Using a serrated knife, carefully cut a wedge in the chilled balls large enough for the teeth to fit inside (Image 1). Tip: For best results, fold a set of teeth together and use widest part as a guide for your cut. The wedge should go to the center of the cereal ball. Save cut wedges for a later step.

7. Place the teeth inside the opening of the cereal ball and press the ball down around the teeth slightly, if necessary, to secure (Image 2).

8. Cut the ends from both sides of the wedge about 1/2 inch long (Image 1).

9. Insert the cut pieces into the opening on each side of the monster's mouth to close up the sides (Image 2).

10. Use the end of a chopstick or similar utensil to make holes for the eyes (Image 1).

11. Add candy pieces to the holes sticking straight up (Image 2).

12. Press down slightly on candy eyes to secure and store completed treats in an airtight container until ready to serve (Image 3).

13. Print "Beware of Monsters" sign onto card stock, attach to a wooden dowel or paint stick and display near treats when serving (Image 4).

Candy Corn Brownies

Compliments of Sam Henderson

Hi Friends,

Concentric rings of colored sugar give moist, chocolaty brownies a candy-corn makeover for Halloween. They're as pleasing to the eye as they are to the palate. Download the concentric rings template and get the recipe from below:

Candy Corn Brownies Recipe

Ingredients

Brownies:
1/2 cup unsalted butter
4 ounces unsweetened chocolate
4 eggs
1/4 teaspoon salt
1-3/4 cups sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup all-purpose flour
yellow, orange and white sanding sugars for topping

Icing:
3 cups confectioners' sugar
1/4 cup milk
2 tablespoons light corn syrup
3/4 teaspoon vanilla
candy corn template printed onto cardstock

Instructions
1. Prepare an 8 inch round cake pan by molding aluminum foil around the outside with the shiny side out.

2. Remove the foil and use it to line the inside of the pan. Fit it into the pan and lightly coat with cooking spray, then set aside.

3. Melt butter and chocolate together in a small saucepan over medium-low heat (Image 1) and set aside to cool completely before proceeding.

4. Place eggs and salt in a mixing bowl (Image 2) and beat on medium-high setting until light and foamy (about 5 minutes).

5. Add vanilla then add sugar 1/4 cup at a time while beating until mixture becomes thick.

6. With a rubber spatula, stir in the melted chocolate and butter just until combined.

7. Add the flour and stir only until combined (Image 1).

8. Scrape the mixture into the prepared pan and smooth out the top with the rubber spatula (Image 2).

9. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out slightly moistened.

10. Remove brownie from the pan using the aluminum foil and let cool completely on a wire rack.

11. Prepare icing by stirring all of the ingredients together until smooth. When the brownie has cooled, spread a thin layer of icing on the top all the way to the edges.

12. Print out the candy corn brownie template and cut out the outer circle and set it aside (Image 1).

13. Place the two inner circles (still connected) in the center of the brownie and sprinkle yellow sugars over the icing. Tip: Press it slightly with dry fingertips to adhere if necessary (Image 2).

14. Carefully lift the circle template and scrape off any icing.

15. Cut out the smallest circle and place in the center of the brownie. Lay the outer ring that you previously cut out on top of the yellow sugared surface. Set the middle circle aside.

16. Using orange sugars, cover the exposed icing area pressing slightly as necessary with dry fingertips to adhere.

17. Carefully remove the outer and center circles. Place the middle sized circle over the orange sugared surface and sprinkle white sugars on the exposed icing area in the center of the brownie.

18. Remove paper circle template and allow icing to set at least 2 hours before cutting. Next, remove the foil completely and cut the brownies into 8 equal pieces to serve.

Mini "Pumpkin" Wreath

Courtesy of Marian Parsons

Hi Friends,

Instead of making a wreath with bulky plastic gourds, try using putka pods, which are natural dried seed pods that look exactly like tiny pumpkins. This wreath makes an elegant fall statement. Although the tiny orange shapes covering this wreath look like diminutive pumpkins, they're a great stand-in for mini pumpkins, the dried organic seed pods don't deteriorate, so your wreath can be displayed year after year. Get crafting to make your own.

Materials Needed:
12" foam wreath form
7-8 cups dried putka pods
hot glue gun and glue sticks
scissors
ribbon

Apply Putka Pods
Preheat hot glue gun. Apply a small dab of hot glue to foam wreath (Image 1). Immediately press a dried putka pod into hot glue and hold into place until glue cools (Image 2). Repeat until entire front and sides of wreath are covered, arranging pods as close together as possible (Images 3 and 4). The back side of the wreath can remain uncovered unless wreath is going to be hung in front of a mirror (Image 5). Note: Some of the wreath form will still be visible through the pods at this point.

Add Second Layer of Pods
Place a small dab of hot glue on underside of a pod and press it into a place on the wreath where form is showing through (Images 1 and 2). Continue to apply pods to fill gaps until wreath form is no longer visible (Images 3 and 4). Tip: Step back from wreath a few times during this step to make sure second layer of pods is evenly applied.

Clean Wreath and Hang With Ribbon
Once all pods are glued in place, use your fingers to gently remove any strings left by hot glue (Image 1). Loop a wide ribbon around completed wreath to hang indoors or out. Tip: This simple, rustic wreath would also make a beautiful candle ring for a fall centerpiece or you could make miniature wreaths to hold tea lights.
