Perfect Pumpkin Carving Tools...

Courtesy of HGTV

Hi Friends,

Use this list to pick the perfect tools for pumpkin-carving this Halloween. You can certainly carve a pumpkin with nothing more than a small kitchen knife. But who would want to when you can create a prize jack-o'-lantern with the tools listed here? Also consider this tip: Cut a hole in the bottom of your pumpkin for the candle. That leaves the entire top of the pumpkin for creative carving. And how about using small electric light fixtures or a string of fairy lights to illuminate your jack?

Serrated knives -- These come in a variety of sizes for big and little cuts. Heavy-duty versions of this knife have larger zigzag serrations for cutting through tough pumpkin skin.

Double-edged serrated knife -- The tiniest model is great for hard-to-get spots. You can saw in both directions, which comes in handy when you're making the perfect evil eyeball.

Utility knife -- A strong, sharp mat knife is easily able to cut through even the toughest pumpkin rind.

Craft knife -- This artist's tool can make delicate patterns or help you cut out little tough-to-reach spots.

Melon baller -- Scrape away the final layer of stringy innards with this super scooper.

Apple corer -- Use the traditional coring motion to make a polka-dot pumpkin. Or drag the edge of the corer to make snaky stripes that don't penetrate the entire skin of the pumpkin.

Linocut tool -- Used to cut linoleum in printmaking, a linocut cutter is a handy tool for peeling away delicate strands of pumpkin flesh. Use this tool to draw delicate patterns or features.

Sculptor's loop -- When it comes to making swirling lines in the pumpkin rind, this tool works even better than the apple corer. The key: Make sure you don't go all the way through the rind.

Cookie cutters and hammer -- Try lightly hammering old-fashioned cookie cutters part-way into the pumpkin's flesh. The trick: Gently pull out the cookie cutter and use a linoleum cutter to scrape away the pumpkin rind within the cookie-cutter shape. The light will shine through the remaining layer of rind. Or hammer a small cutter all the way through.

Keyhole saw -- This is the perfect tool for cutting out a lid or making an opening in the bottom of the pumpkin.

Pumpkin scoop and shovel -- Say goodbye to seeds with these handy tools.

Drill -- A wonderful hole-poker.

You don't have to be an expert to get expert results, you just need the right tools...

Floating Jack-O'-Lanterns...

Courtesy of HGTV

Hi Friends,

Sticks holding these jack-o'-lanterns disappear into the night, making the pumpkin appear to be floating in the darkness.

Materials and Tools:

papier-maché jack-o'-lanterns (available at craft stores)
paint (orange, green and black)
paintbrushes
black marker
utility knife
battery-operated white lights (short strands)
wooden plate (available at craft stores)
1/2" wooden dowel
screws
drill
hot glue gun
polyurethane

Steps:

1. Paint the pumpkins and let dry.

2. Draw the jack-o'-lantern face with a marker, and then cut it out using a utility knife. Cut a hole in the back of the pumpkin large enough for the battery pack of the lights to fit through. Insert the lights.

3. To make each post, drill a pilot hole through the center of a wooden plate and one in the end of the dowel. Attach the two by driving a screw through the plate into the dowel.

4. Paint the post and plate black and let dry. Secure the base of the jack-o'-lantern to the plate using hot glue. Apply a couple coats of polyurethane to the entire project for protection.

It's like magic, spooky...

Black Bat Napkin Ring...

Courtesy of HGTV

Hi Friends,

Create a simple black bat tabletop napkin ring for your Halloween festivities.

Materials and Tools:

black felt
white felt
sewing machine
needle and black thread
black pipe cleaners
scissors
template (bat stamp or other bat outline)

Steps:

1. Using a bat stamp as a template, cut out the bat wings and two pieces of bat body from the black felt.

2. Hand-stitch a black pipe cleaner to the top edge of the bat wings on one side.

3. Pin the two bat body pieces together and hand-stitch around the edge, leaving an opening. Stuff in scraps of leftover black felt to poof the bat body a bit. Hand-stitch the opening closed.

4. Hand-stitch the bat bodies to the bat wings on the opposite side of the one with the black pipe cleaner.

5. Cut out triangle eyes and triangle fangs from the white felt and glue to the bat's face.

8. Cut a rectangular strip of felt three inches wide by about six to seven inches long, depending on the thickness of your napkins. Fold the long sides into the middle and then fold the strip in half lengthwise. The finished strip is about 3/4-inch wide by the cut length. Use the sewing machine to stitch along the edge and then sew the ends together to form a ring.

9. Hand-sew the ring onto the back of the bat wings going into the bat body a bit as well to ensure it all stays together.

Spooky and functional, it doesn't get any better...

How to Make Peekaboo Pumpkins

Courtesy of Layla Palmer

Hi Friends,

Create a spooktacular vignette of peeking pumpkins using miniature gourds and a variety of inexpensive bowls and lidded dishes.

Materials Needed:

3 to 5 miniature pumpkins
a mixture of 3 to 5 small bowls and lidded dishes
spray primer (if any of the dishes are not black or white)
black and/or white spray paint
googly eyes
craft glue

Collect Dishes
Pull together a grouping of small, inexpensive bowls or lidded dishes. Tip: Search flea markets and thrift stores for super cheap options with character.

Spray Primer
The idea is to paint all the dishes black or white, so use spray primer to coat any of the dishes that aren't either of those colors.

Spray-Paint
Once the spray primer is completely dry, use black and/or white spray paint to coat all of the primed surfaces.

Attach Eyes
Apply craft glue to the back of a pair of googly eyes (Image 1), then attach one set of googly eyes to each pumpkin (Image 2). Tip: Place the pumpkins in the dishes before you attach the eyes so you can make sure they're positioned correctly.

How to Make a Pumpkin Candy Dish...

Courtesy of Layla Palmer

Hi Friends,

An artificial pumpkin and fall-themed fabric make a great container for Halloween treats.

Materials Needed:

medium or large artificial pumpkin
1/2 yard of burlap or any fall-themed fabric
X-Acto or pumpkin-carving knife
2 thumbtacks

1 yard of yarn or thin rope
pencil
Halloween candy

Pin Rope
Use a thumbtack to secure one end of a piece of yarn or rope to your pumpkin. It should be secured as close to the pumpkin's center as possible.

Create Center Line
Wrap the yarn or rope all the way around the pumpkin, making sure it stays as level as possible, and secure the other end of it with a thumbtack (Image 1). The two thumbtacks should sit right next to each other. Using the yarn or rope as a guide, draw a light pencil line all the way around the pumpkin (Image 2).

Cut Pumpkin
Remove the thumbtacks and yarn, then carefully cut the pumpkin in half with an X-Acto or pumpkin-carving knife. Tip: To make sure your pumpkin top lines up correctly with its base after it's cut, look for the large vertical seam found on one side of all artificial pumpkins. Line the base of the pumpkin with fabric or burlap, then fill with Halloween candy.

A project that is not only simple but awards your sweet tooth for all the not-so-hard work...

Lollipop Ghost Halloween Party Invitation...

Courtesy of HGTV

Hi Friends,

Invite family and friends to your haunted house with Halloween party invitations that are part ghost and part sweet treat.

Materials and Tools:

jumbo-size flat lollipops (ours are about 5-1/2" round with a 10" wooden stick)
white felt
white card stock
double-stick tape
white pipe cleaners
red ribbon
scissors
black felt
craft glue

Steps:

1. Trace around lollipop onto white card stock and cut out. Do this twice to create two white card stock circles for each ghost invite. Print or write by hand the party invitation details onto one, leaving the other blank. Use double-stick tape to adhere the circles to the front and back of the lollipop. The blank side is the ghost's face, and the side with the party info is the back.

2. Cut white felt into squares large enough to cover candy and leave enough drape to create the ghost's body (we used 20-inch squares).

3. Fold two opposite corners of the white felt square together, forming a large triangle. Place the lollipop inside the triangle, pushing it against the middle of the folded edge. Gather the felt around the lollipop and tie it securely with a white pipe cleaner. Trim off excess pipe cleaner.

4. Tie red ribbon around the ghost's neck to cover the pipe cleaner. Cut two eyes from the black felt and attach with glue.

Now put that list together for your upcoming Halloween Party...

Halloween Skull Wreath...

Courtesy of HGTV

Hi Friends,

Turn an ordinary foliage wreath into a fun and creepy Halloween decoration with the addition of black spray paint and a few embellishments.

Materials and Tools:

wreath covered with silk foliage
flat black spray paint
orange and black glass Christmas balls
plastic skulls
hot-glue gun and glue sticks
black ribbon

Steps:

1. Spray foliage wreath with black spray paint. Try to cover all of the greenery or flowers with spray paint so no other colors show. This may take several coats.

2. Attach skulls to the wreath with hot glue, spacing them evenly. Fill in with black and orange glass balls, attaching them with hot glue or tying them on with black ribbon.

3. A fun alternative to the plastic skulls are plastic vampire's teeth, wrapped Halloween candy or chatter teeth.

Have fun with your Halloween Skull Wreath; add your favorite things to give it a personal touch.

How to Carve and Decorate Faux Pumpkins...

Courtesy of Cathie Filian and Steve Piacenza

Hi Friends,

Enjoy DIY's Witch Crafts spin on classic Halloween Pumpkin Carving. Today, you will learn fun ways to decorate faux pumpkins by carving, using card stock and drawing with markers. Here are the instructions for Carving and Decorating Faux Pumpkins:

Materials and Tools:

foam pumpkins
permanent marker
card stock (optional)
low tack painter's tape (optional)
knife
battery-operated tea light
craft foam
scissors
foam glue
craft paint
glitter
embellishments (feathers, pompoms, etc.)
vase or urn

Steps:

1. Carving a foam pumpkin: Draw a face on your pumpkin. You can either freehand a design or create a pattern on card stock and tape it to the pumpkin to trace.

2. Carve out the face with a knife, cutting away your pen marks. Cut the top off of the pumpkin.

3. Use only battery-operated tea lights inside of foam pumpkins, as they can be flammable.

4. Make a glitzy pumpkin witch: Paint a face on your pumpkin and add glitter. Embellish the pumpkin with things like feathers, pompoms, etc.

5. Line the rim of a vase or urn with feathers and set the pumpkin on top.

6. Create a crazy foam face pumpkin: Cut shapes from craft foam and use foam glue to stick them to the pumpkin.

7. Have your child sign the bottom of the pumpkin for a holiday heirloom that will last for years.

"Blood Stained" Halloween Party Invitations...

Courtesy of HGTV

Hi Friends,

Get your party guests and vampire enthusiasts in the mood for a spooky Halloween gathering by sending out easy-to-make "blood-stained" invitations.

Materials and Tools
printable cardstock invitations and envelopes
computer printer
decorative hole punch
red food coloring
eye dropper
bowl
water
red candle
lighter

Steps

1. Using printable cardstock, print out your invitations with your party information. A gothic font style fits the theme especially well. Once the invitations are printed, use a decorative hole-punch to make an ornate design in the four corners of the invitation.

2. In a small bowl of water, add red food coloring and mix well. Use enough food coloring to get a mixture that’s blood red.

3. Using an eye dropper, make a few red water droplets randomly on the invitation. Holding the dropper up high will help create a splattered effect. Allow the invitations to dry thoroughly before continuing.

Note: Avoid stacking the invitations on top of each other as they may tend to stick together.

4. For an extra scary touch, once the invitations have dried and are in their addressed envelopes, seal the flap with a few drops of melted blood red candle wax.

Your macabre party invitations are likely to be a particular hit among fans of the vampire craze, which gets an added boost at Halloween.

How to Make a Burlap Halloween Table Runner...

Courtesy of Marian Parsons

Hi Friends,

Add a rustic touch to your Halloween table setting with a burlap runner decorated with ghostly bare branches and ravens.

Materials Needed:

burlap fabric: length of table plus 20"
coordinating cotton thread
scissors
sewing machine
blank plastic stencil
computer
printer
printer paper
permanent marker
craft knife
cutting board or mat
2" foam brush
black acrylic paint
no. 2 liner brush
tin foil
Download Crow Template HERE

Cut and Sew Burlap Runner
Measure and cut burlap to table length plus 20 inches, which will leave a 10-inch overhang on each end of the table. Measure and cut runner to 20 inches wide (Image 1). Using coordinating thread, machine stitch all four sides of runner, one inch in from edge to prevent burlap from fraying beyond one inch (Image 2).

Create Stencil
Print crow template in 5" x 7" photo format or 8" x 10" if larger bird is desired. Place blank plastic stencil over printed template and trace with permanent marker. Place stencil on cutting board or mat. Use craft knife to cut out bird's outline. Tip: Leave a small part of bird's legs uncut in order to keep stencil connected.

Paint Branches
Use a pencil to lightly sketch bare branches on runner. Paint over sketched branches with artist's brush and black acrylic paint. Tip: Take a silhouette photo of a tree to use as inspiration when sketching branches.

Stencil Crow
Place runner on a flat surface with a piece of tin foil under work area to prevent paint from bleeding through. Position stencil so crow is perched on branch. Load acrylic paint onto two-inch foam brush and blot gently over stencil (Image 1). Use artist's brush to paint crow's legs and feet (Image 2). Repeat stencil on additional branches as desired and allow paint to dry. Tip: Using a paper towel to remove excess paint from brush will reduce bleeding.

Create Fringe
Loosen edges of burlap gently with fingers. Pull threads to create fringed border on all four sides. Note: Some burlap is not machine washable, so quickly clean up any spills by blotting them with water and prevent stains by not placing food directly on runner.

Make a Halloween Chalkboard Serving Tray...

Courtesy of Janell Beals

Hi Friends,

Serve Halloween guests in style with this easy-to-create and totally customizable chalkboard tray.

Materials Needed:

unfinished or old wooden tray
tinted primer
chalkboard paint
paintbrush
fine-grit sanding pad
tack cloth
towel
chalk

Source Tray
If tray has a painted or varnished layer, thoroughly sand it to remove any existing finish.

Apply Primer
Brush on an even layer of tinted primer; allow to dry for three hours.

Sand Surfaces
Sand off any rough or raised areas, then wipe clean with tack cloth to ensure a smooth, dust-free surface.

Apply Paint
Brush on an even layer of chalkboard paint; allow to dry for three hours.

Treat Tray Surface With Chalk
Prepare tray for writing by covering surfaces using a large chalk stick on its side (Image 1). This allows all future markings to be fully erasable. Rub chalk into surfaces then wipe away with a towel (Image 2). Complete your spooktacular tray with your favorite Halloween phrase or a message to your guests.

Great idea for Halloween or any Holiday; you only need chalk to make a magical transition to your special occasion. Serve your family and friends in personalize style.
