How to Celebrate Mom (Based on Her Astrological Sign)...
Courtesy of Maria Conti
Photography by Cheyenne Mojica Photography
Happy Mother's Day Friends,
Let’s face it — shopping for Mother's Day is no easy task. I mean, what do you give the woman who has, quite literally, given you the gift of life? No, a scented-candle will not suffice.
Moms are selfless, supportive, understanding and unconditional — and they deserve a Mother's Day that is as special and spectacular as they are!
Where to start? Her birthday, of course! As resident astrology-guru, I've consulted the stars and rounded up personalized ways to celebrate Mom, based on her sign.
The Aquarius Mom
(January 20 — February 18)
Erin Nelson
Eccentric Aquarians are lovers of all-things art and innovation. Take your Aquarius-mom to the opening of an art gallery or for a beer-tasting at a local brewery. She will appreciate your willingness to try new things, and even more so, your willingness to try them with her.
The Pisces Mom
(February 19 — March 20)
Wolf Hoffmann/Tommy Sims/Nashville Convention & Visitors Bureau
Soulful, sweet and imaginative Pisces find their happiness by way of music. Show your Pisces-mom your appreciation of her through tickets to see a live music show together. The time spent with you, and with music, will feed her soul and leave her feeling all the love you could wish for on her special day.
The Aries Mom
(March 21 — April 19)
If your mom is an adventure-seeking Aries, she'll adore spending an athletic, action-packed afternoon with you. Take her on a scenic hiking trail, try out a kickboxing class or grab tickets to a baseball game.
The Taurus Mom
(April 20 — May 20)
Nick Pironio
Taurus-born Moms are patient providers that work diligently to provide comfortable, reliable and loving households for their children. Provide them with some much-needed and well-deserved R+R. A luxurious mommy-and-me day at the spa will provide them the quality time and pampering needed to really celebrate Mother's Day this year.
The Gemini Mom
(May 21 — June 20)
Chat-happy and trend-loving Gemini moms will love spending Mother's Day catching up on the latest happenings in their kids' lives over brunch at the trendiest spot in town. Be sure to gift your Gem-mom with all the juicy details of your latest relationships or neighbor-drama and don't leave anything out.
The Cancer Mom
(June 21 — July 22)
Kelly Fondots
These mamas are at their happiest when cuddled up with their kiddos! No matter how old you are, your mom will be thrilled to celebrate Mother's Day couch-side, sharing a fluffy throw and watching favorite movies with her family. You'll get bonus points if you come baring all the tasty fixings needed to throw together a killer homemade pizza.
The Leo Mom
(July 23 — August 22)
If your mom is a Leo, I’m sure you’re well-aware of her love (and, at times, flair) for drama. What better gift to give her than front-row tickets to see drama up close and personal? For a Mother’s Day well spent, grab tickets to a play put on by your local theatre. If the acting is sub-par, all the better! A Leo-mom loves a critiquing sesh just as much as any ol’ grade-A performance.
The Virgo Mom
(August 23 — September 22)
Missouri Botanical Garden
Ah, the Virgo mom — she’s a tough one. She knows exactly what she likes and, even more so, what she does not. Giving gifts to her is always hit or miss, and the last thing you want to do is give her another Mother’s Day gift to return this year. Instead, celebrate your ultra-particular-Virgo-mom by surrounding her with natural beauty. Start with an afternoon tea, followed by a walk through the local botanical gardens. An earth-sign and lover of beauty, this Mother’s Day will leave Virgo-mom feeling celebrated and happy.
The Libra Mom
(September 23 — October 22)
Unnata LLC
She’s always seeking more balance in her life, so why not make it fun? Laugh your way through an aerial yoga class with your Libra mom. She may not find inner-balance (and she’ll probably twist herself into a pretzel!), but the time you spend together will be well worth it.
The Scorpio Mom
(October 23 — November 21)
Thinkstock
Scorpio Moms are prone to stress and will reap serious benefits from a deep-tissue massage. Give her the gift of relaxation with a certificate to a well-renowned masseuse in your area. You can give it to her over an easy-breezy, carefree trip to the ice creamery in town. Ice cream and a massage — what could be sweeter?
The Sagittarius Mom
(November 22 — December 21)
Noel Hendrickson
Take a weekend road trip with your travel-loving Sagittarius-mom. Be sure to do a little research for the best bite (and brew!) in town, because she’ll love the chance to taste local cuisine while she’s there. Commemorate the weekend with matching t-shirts or add funky new tchotchkes to her collection.
The Capricorn Mom
(December 22 — January 19)
Capricorn mothers work hard to provide their children with the very best of the best, and Mother’s Day is the perfect time to return the favor. A mini-shopping spree at her favorite shopping spots will leave her feeling extra-special and extra-appreciated. Isn’t that what Mother’s Day is all about?
She gave you a birthday, so you better know hers...

Tackle Early Spring Gardening Chores...
Courtesy of HGTV
Hi Friends,
Eager to get outside? Check out these early spring gardening chores that you can start now.
Do you ever get that urge to go out and do something in the garden, even though it may be too early in the year to do much? "I get a little too eager every now and then, thinking that it's okay to plant something when it isn't, or wanting to mow the lawn even though it doesn't need it," says master gardener Paul James.
That's not to say there aren't things that can be done in the off-season, especially during the few weeks before the official gardening season begins. Paul has come up with a list of things that can be done now.
Repair a Dry Stacked-Stone Wall
"I love the natural look of stones that are stacked dry, meaning that they're not actually mortared in place" Paul says. However, they do have a tendency to shift during the winter months. As a result, the border becomes a bit unsightly, not to mention dangerous, especially if kids occasionally walk on the stones.
Late winter to early spring is an ideal time to reposition stones. Sometimes minor adjustments are all that's needed; simply moving the larger stones with smaller ones can stabilize the border. It doesn't take all that much time or effort, and the payoff is worth it in terms of enhanced aesthetics and safety.
Fix Uneven Steppingstones
Even stepping stones in the lawn can become unstable due to excessive rains or heaving, caused by alternating periods of freezing and thawing. So they too should be stabilized and leveled to make them safe to walk on. To fix, this requires that you actually lift the stones and add soil or gravel beneath them. Use a level to verify that they are even with the ground.
Correct Tunnels Made by Garden Pests
Unstable stones aren't the only hazards that can lead to a sprained ankle. There are also tunnels and mounds of dirt created by moles and gophers. They too should be leveled with a metal rake and tamped firmly. The exposed soil can later be reseeded with grass seed or left as-is if your turfgrass is the type that tends to spread.
Clean Birdhouses
Inspect birdhouses to make sure they're firmly mounted. Clean their feeders, filling them with fresh seed once they dry. Give birdbaths a good scrubbing and refill with water. Last but not least, create a pile of ready-for-the-taking nesting materials to make life a little easier for our feathered friends.
Spring-Flowering Bulbs
It's not unusual for the foliage of early spring-blooming bulbs to turn brown, especially at the tips, when temperatures drop suddenly. Although the foliage may not look all that great, the bulbs themselves will be just fine and will flower pretty much on schedule.
Now is a good time to do a quick sketch of where your bulbs are. This will help when the foliage fades later in the year and you begin planting annuals and perennials in the same bed. You'll have a map of where the bulbs are and avoid destroying them as you dig.
Touch Up Mulch
This is the ideal time of year to inspect your mulch, particularly its depth. Chances are organic mulches, especially those made from shredded or chipped wood, have decomposed somewhat or have been washed away by heavy rains.
With a metal rake, fluff your mulch a bit and try to level it out over your garden beds. Along the way, use a ruler to determine the average depth of the mulch. Ideally, you want at least a 2-inch layer, and 3 to 4 inches is OK, especially for southern gardeners.
Winter Pruning Trick
If you haven't already completed pruning your deciduous trees and shrubs, there's still time. Paul has a trick that will help you select which branches to prune away and which to keep.
First, stare at the tree or shrub in question with an eye toward its desired shape. Stare at it from several different perspectives from a distance at various angles, from just a few feet away, and even looking up into its canopy.
Now, rather than doing any pruning, tie some colored ribbon or twine around each limb or branch you think you want to prune. Over the course of several days, each time you walk by the tree or shrub, at different angles and various distances, try to imagine what it will ultimately look like if you were to remove the selected limbs.
Feel free to change your mind. If you're not sure about one of the limbs you've selected, remove the ribbon or move it to another limb. Then re-evaluate your selection. Within a few days, you'll get a better feel for where you should make your pruning cuts and greatly increase your chances of success when you finally make those cuts for real.
Other Tasks to Complete
- Clean gutters to prevent water from drowning plants below.
- Cut back ornamental grasses to about 6 inches tall.
- Cut back perennials almost to ground level.
- Remove dead wood and suckers from trees and shrubs, both evergreen and deciduous.
- Plant dormant trees and shrubs.
- Move dormant plants.
- Dig and divide emerging perennials.
- Scrub clay pots.
- Clean tools.
- Remove leaves from the bottom of ponds or other water features.
Happy planting...

Happy Earth Day!
Courtesy of National Geographic
Hi Friends,
In 1970 smog-choked major U.S. cities and toxic waste flooded rivers. That same year nearly 20 million Americans participated in events on April 22, spearheaded by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson, to draw attention to the environmental issues plaguing the planet and human health. Named Earth Day, April 22 has remained a time to celebrate restoration and stand up for the planet. Today we wanted to share with our friends...
It's Earth Day and we thank each and every person for doing your part.

Happy Easter!
Courtesy of Sassy Cats
Happy Easter Friends!
May the simple joys fill your day, hope light your path, the many blessings of Easter stay forever in your heart, and the Origin of The Easter Bunny make your day.
Origin of The Easter Bunny
The Easter Bunny is a symbol that originated with the pagan festival of Easter. The goddess, Easter, was worshiped by the Anglo-Saxons through her earthly symbol, the hare or rabbit.
The date of Easter is determined by the moon whose symbolism is strongly tied to that of the hare. In fact, the hare is the symbol for the moon. Ever since the Council of Nicea in 325 A.D., Easter has been celebrated on the first Sunday following the first full moon after March 21st.
The Easter bunny was introduced to American folklore by the German settlers who arrived in the Pennsylvania Dutch country during the 1700s. The arrival of the "Oschter Haws" was considered "childhood's greatest pleasure" next to a visit from Christ-Kindel on Christmas Eve. The children believed that if they were good the "Oschter Haws" would lay a nest of colored eggs.
The children would build their nest in a secluded place in the home, the barn or the
garden. Boys would use their caps and girls their bonnets to make the nests . The use of elaborate Easter baskets came later as the tradition of the Easter bunny spread through out the country.

Host a Charming Easter Dinner...
Courtesy of Courtney Whitmore
Photography by Evin Photography
Happy Easter Friends,
Throw a charming Easter dinner party this year filled with yellow and green accents, a delicious menu, sweet party favors and an adorable kids' table.
A Charming Easter Tablescape is essential. Celebrate Easter by setting a dinner table full of charming details. Pick a color palette of butter yellow and grass green to usher in spring in style.
Beautiful Easter Blooms
Bring the freshness of spring to your table by arranging blooms of tulips, star of Bethlehem and maidenhair ferns into white vases like milk glass or Easter rabbit vases on coordinating cake stands for height.
DIY Dipped Flatware
Add a pop of coordinated color with hand-dipped flatware. Simply dip a set of flatware in yellow paint and let dry. Finish with a clear topcoat. The colorblock look gives a modern twist to a traditional place setting, and you will be able to use them for future occasions. Be sure to handwash only.
Festive Bunny Centerpiece
Nestle a bunny vase inside a rimmed bowl or wide vase filled with green grass to create a festive Easter centerpiece. Add coordinated yellow Easter eggs throughout.
Charming Easter Place Setting
Tie in pops of green by swapping traditional chargers for cabbage leaves. Stack white on white plates, and finish with coordinating napkins in a modern geometric pattern.
Bunny Soap Party Favor
Send guests home with mini bunny soap hand tied with white sheer ribbon and placed in fluted white mini bowls for the perfectly coordinated favor.
Mini Basket Decor
Scatter small white Easter baskets filled with mini yellow and white chocolate egg candies throughout the table to serve as decor, as well as an extra touch of sweetness. Let guests nibble as they enjoy company and conversation.
Cute Easter Kids' Table
Set a coordinated pink and yellow table just for the little ones complete with sweet treats, special basket favors and Easter egg touches.
Set the Table
Top white plates with pink ones for a perfectly coordinated place setting atop pink and white pompom fabric reminiscent of cute bunny tails. To make the bunny tail tablecloth, glue pom poms to a solid-colored tablecloth in a random pattern, or use double-stick tape to attach on a plastic tablecloth.
Special Hanging Treats
Give the kids a special treat by hanging edible bunny-shaped cookies on a miniature white tree that serves double duty as a cute, festive centerpiece.
Bunny Cookie Tree
Create your own mini tree by spraying a small branch in white and placing floral foam in a small planter. Adorn with yellow gingham bows and hanging bunny-shaped cookies. Finish by gluing fake green leaves.
Darling Easter Place Settings
Make each little one feel special with their own striped yellow Easter basket filled with yellow paper grass filler, pink and yellow Easter eggs and a gingham bow.
DIY Bunny Napkin Rings
Give the kids something to giggle about with little bunny ear napkin rings. Simply sew fabric in two ear shapes, stitch on to a napkin ring and glue on a bunny tail pom pom.
Sippin' Sweet
Serve milk in glass bottles tied with white raffia and finished with yellow- and white- striped paper straws to coordinate with the yellow and pink party table.
Colorful Table Setting
Be sure to add pops of color to the party table with inexpensive paper plates in coordinating colors like pink and yellow. Fill mini baking cups with yellow and pink chocolate eggs for a special treat.
Sweet Basket Favors
Send the kids home with their place setting baskets, and let them collect the cookies and edible eggs to place inside as treats for later. They will love this sweet basket as a memory of their Easter dinner.

9 Fire-Safety Tips
Courtesy of HGTV
Hi Friends,
Think you're ready? Take every precaution by consulting our checklist.
Be prepared with these tips for preventing and controlling fires in the home.
- Before buying a fire extinguisher, check its intended purpose. Some extinguishers effectively treat a few or all of the following varieties of fires: trash, wood, paper, liquids, grease and electrical.
- Position the fire extinguishers throughout your house and on all levels, including along the hallways outside bedrooms and bathrooms. Install the kitchen fire extinguisher near the stove but not directly under it. You don't want to be stumbling around beneath the flames in the event of a stovetop fire. Mount it off center along the interior of a cabinet door to take up as little space as possible.
- Be sure extinguishers are full and ready for use. If they're battery-powered, remember to check the regularly. It's a good idea to change the batteries twice a year, perhaps at the same times as you change your clocks in the fall and spring.
- Don't fight a grease fire with water. When cooking, keep a box of baking soda readily available to put out any grease fires, or extinguish the flames with a lid.
- When fighting a fire with an extinguisher, stand six feet away and sweep the nozzle back and forth.
- Install smoke and heat detectors to notify your family and allow plenty of time to escape during a house fire.
- Develop a family escape plan, with evacuation routes from each room.
- Place stickers or decals on children's windows to assist firefighters in identifying those rooms.
- Make sure your whole family knows how to set off any home panic buttons to notify authorities and other family members of a house fire.
